WATER SPORTS PROGRAM
Camp
Cayuga is a member of the American Red Cross (ARC) Wayne County Chapter. Our
Waterfront Program meets the standards and follows the guidelines set forth
by the ARC, as well as the American Camping Association
(ACA).
SWIM INSTRUCTION
Swimming instruction is offered daily at our pools. On your first visit to
the pool, you’ll be given a swim test so our Waterfront Staff can
determine your swimming ability. A wristband, which represents different
skill levels, will be provided to each camper. These wristbands are worn by
our campers at all times and serve as a
useful tool for our pool and lakefront staff.
SWIMMING POOLS
Cayuga’s Water Sports Program features 2 swimming pools: one on Junior Campus
(measuring 75’ by 35’) and the other on Teen Campus (measuring 50’ by 30’).
The pools are utilized during the day for American Red Cross Swim
Instruction, Recreational Swimming, and Water Sport Activities including:
Water Basketball, Water Polo, and Water Volleyball. Both pools are equipped
with lights and are utilized during certain Evening Activities (such as the
Hawaiian Pool Party) and Special Events, including the Water Carnival, Polar Bear Club, Camp
Olympics, Intercamp Swim Meets, and Scuba Diving Clinics.
WATERFRONT STAFF
The
swimming instructors, lifeguards, and lookouts are supervised by Cayuga’s
Pool Directors, who hold Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification from
the ARC and have experience managing staff, maintaining pool facilities, and
instructing/coaching swim classes to children. Cayuga’s Pool Staff includes
8 to 10 swim instructors and lifeguards. All staff hold ARC certifications
(or equivalent) in WSI and/or lifeguarding. There are always staff members
present at both pools who hold current certification in first-aid and CPR.
In addition, all Pool Staff are trained, evaluated, and qualified by our
Pool Directors in emergency and rescue procedures.
SCUBA DIVING CLINICS
Camp
Cayuga’s Water Sports Program also features Scuba Diving Instruction!
Scuba Diving Clinics are voluntary and offered during each camp session. The
clinics are not part of the normal activity program and advance registration
is required. The Scuba Diving Registration Form and Release Form can be
retrieved off our “Camp Forms” webpage or
PADI CERTIFIED INSTRUCTORS
Cayuga’s Scuba Diving Clinics are operated by professional PADI certified
scuba diving instructors from Inland Water Sports. The instructors are
mature adults who have experience teaching scuba diving to children at
summer camps.
SCUBA DIVING INSTRUCTION
Scuba
Classes take place in the main pool where the professional instructors will
teach campers the fundamental skills of Scuba Diving which include:
Equipment Use, Underwater Breathing with tanks, Equalizing Pressure
Techniques, and Clearing Goggles.
ELIGIBILITY
Campers
who have basic swimming skills are
eligible to participate in this clinic. There is no age restriction. Camp Cayuga Scuba Diving
certification will be awarded to all campers who successfully complete the
clinic.
SAFETY
Cayuga’s Scuba Diving Clinic follows the same safety guidelines as
professional scuba diving schools. Safety rules and procedures are carefully
reviewed and practiced with each camper. Inland Water Sports has an
outstanding reputation for their professionalism, ability to instruct
children, quality equipment, and emphasis on safety!
