The Director of our Adventure & Wilderness Program is certified to supervise and instruct at our Adventure Ropes Course. All instructors are college-age and have current certification or equivalent documented experience. The Adventure Ropes Course Staff are trained, evaluated, and qualified by our Adventure & Wilderness Director. There’s always a staff member present at the Ropes Course who holds current certification in first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Harnesses, safety lines, trained spotters, and experienced instructors provide the safe nurturing environment needed to promote self-confidence and self-esteem. Cayuga's Adventure Ropes Course meets the current standards and guidelines set forth by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and the American Camping Association (ACA). It is inspected annually by a certified ACCT Course Inspector.
The Circus Program is offered on a daily basis and all campers are eligible to participate. While many of the world's greatest circus performers are 7th and 8th generation performers, you'll be amazed what you can learn in just one summer!
Instruction is patient and thorough with due regard for both safety and enjoyment. Campers progress at their own speed, and will learn the fundamental skills required to properly perform the Circus Act of their choice. All of our Circus Instructors are trained and supervised by the Flying Trapeze Director, who is a qualified professional circus performer.
A variety of Circus Acts are offered daily to our campers. Generally speaking, the most popular circus acts include: Juggling, Diabolo, Plate Spinning, and Devil Sticks. Precise coordination and concentration are the two basic skills you'll learn at the Circus Activity. If you're interested in learning more difficult Circus Acts, you can sign-up for advanced instruction which is available to qualified campers.
Depending upon camper interest, a Circus Clinic will be scheduled for campers who express an interest in receiving "intense instruction". Clinic participation is voluntary and campers can simply sign-up at camp. There are no age restrictions and no try-outs! It's included in the camp tuition and no advance registration is required. In the past, Cayuga's Circus Staff have taught the following acts during the Circus Clinic.
UNICYCLE & STILT WALKING ACTS
Precise balance is the fundamental skill taught for these two acts. You'll become a wizard on wheels as you learn the unique skill of riding a unicycle. And Stilt Walking is even more fun than it looks! It's astounding how quickly you'll learn how to keep your balance on the stilts while walking.
TIGHT WIRE ACT
Defy gravity on the slender, shimmering silver strand - the tight wire! For training purposes, the wire is less than 3 feet off the ground, but the thrill still exists when you make it across the wire to safety! You'll be surprised how easy it is when you use our balance-pole.
The Rolling Globe Act is a lot of fun too! During the clinic, you'll learn how to keep your balance on top of the globe while you walk on it. The faster you walk - the faster the globe rolls! Our Circus Staff will teach you a few "circus secrets" to help you keep your balance.
ACROBATICS & TUMBLING ACTS
You'll flip over these 2 acts! They're exciting "team" acts and by the end of the clinic, you'll probably be ready to take your act "on the road". But seriously, these acts are loads of fun and you don't need any gymnastics experience to participate.
Campers who participated in the Circus Clinic will perform their dazzling routines in Cayuga's Circus Show, which takes place in front of the entire camp population. It's a very exciting & thrilling Show to watch! By the end of the clinic, you'd be amazed to see the dazzling routines performed by our campers. Cayuga’s Performing Arts Program provides an opportunity for self-expression in a variety of different ways. The program emphasizes 3 main areas of instruction: Drama, Dance, and Music.
The Drama Activity includes instruction in basic acting techniques. For the more serious “actor or actress” who enjoys theatre performances, we feature The Drama Club. Our club members perform in 2 productions (1 production in each half-session). In addition to the Drama Activity and Drama Club, Cayuga’s Evening Activity Program also provides campers with an opportunity to perform on stage! Some of these evening activities include: Cabin Skit Night, MTV Night, Stars in Your Eyes, The Big Talent Show, and Puttin’ on the Hits, just to name a few.
The Dance Activity includes instruction in modern dance, ballet, and hip-hop. Yoga and Aerobic Classes are available as well. You can also join Cayuga's Dance Club and perform your routine in our Dance Recital in front of the entire camp this summer!
The Music Activity includes basic instruction in guitar and keyboards. And if you enjoy singing, you can sign-up for The Choir Club! Our musicians and singers have plenty of opportunities to perform on stage during the summer!
PERFORMING ARTS STAFF
Cayuga’s Performing Arts Program is headed-up by the Performing Arts Director, who is typically a Theater Arts teacher during the school year. The college-age instructors, who assist the Performing Arts Director, have been hired for their theatre experience and their ability to work with children. Our staff is qualified to instruct children on all levels of ability and talent.
Acting Classes take place in the Junior Campus Performing Arts Building and on stage in the Teen Campus Rec Center. Dance, Aerobics, and Yoga Classes take place in the Dance Studio which features wall to wall mirrors, ballet bar, step-up blocks, and floor mats. There is a Dance Studio located on each campus. Music Classes take place outdoors in a quiet secluded area, as well as in the Piano Room located in the Performing Arts Building.
QUALITY INSTRUCTION, 10 COURTS, PRIVATE LESSONS
Camp Cayuga operates a top quality Tennis Program under the directorship of a USTA Tennis Professional. Cayuga is a proud member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Our Tennis Program meets the standards and follows the guidelines set forth by the USTA, as well as the ACA.
INSTRUCTION & PRIVATE LESSONS
Tennis lessons from beginner to advanced skill levels are offered daily. Our instructors are assigned between 2 to 5 campers per lesson. The activity period includes a mix of instructional time and recreational time. For the more serious tennis player, one-on-one private lessons are available with our Tennis Pro or one of his qualified assistants. The Private Tennis Lesson Program is voluntary and not part of the normal activity program. Advance registration is required. The Registration Form for Private Tennis Lessons can be retrieved off the "Camp Forms" webpage or click here.
Cayuga's Tennis Center features 10 hard-surfaced courts that are in excellent condition. Top quality racquets are provided, as well as ball machines for assisting with instruction. (You can bring your own tennis racket if you prefer.)
Cayuga's Tennis Program is directed by Joe Manning, who has been a High School Head Tennis Coach for over 20 years. Joe received the Coach of the Year award 3 times in Arkansas. As a player, he was ranked in the USTA at top positions on the state level for singles & doubles. In Texas he was ranked #3 in 4.0 singles and #2 in doubles. Joe has been Cayuga's USTA Tennis Pro since 2001. Cayuga's tennis staff is comprised of 8 to 10 instructors who provide top-notch instruction under the guidance of our Tennis Pro. All instructors are university-level players who have experience teaching tennis to children. Prior to the arrival of our campers, the tennis instructors are trained, evaluated, and qualified by our Tennis Pro.
INTERCAMP TENNIS MATCHES
If you're a tennis competitor, you'll be happy to learn that Cayuga's Tennis Team travels to neighboring camps to compete in Intercamp Tennis Matches at various skill levels. All campers are eligible to join the Tennis Team, since there are no try-outs! You can also compete in Tennis Matches without leaving camp. You can play against your Cayuga friends on a regular basis by participating in Cayuga's Round-Robin Tournaments. These Tournaments and Intercamp Tennis Matches are voluntary. If you want to compete, all you have to do is sign-up at camp.
