Covid-19 Health Plan

SUMMER 2020 REPORT

Camp Cayuga operated in Summer 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19 protocols and program modifications were implemented in accordance with CDC and Pennsylvania guidelines to keep our camp population safe. Our efforts proved to be worthwhile. After being quarantined at home for months, the children flourished at camp. They made new friends, had fun, and gained an appreciation for playing outdoors. Parents expressed their sincere gratitude for our efforts, which reassured our staff and made their experience more rewarding than ever. It was a historic summer! We built a virus-free bubble around camp, remained safe & healthy, and returned home covid-free. In fact, Summer 2020 was one of our healthiest summers ever!

SUMMER 2021 Report

This past summer was more challenging. While we were more accustomed to wearing masks & practicing hygiene etiquette, most campers & staff were unable to isolate at home prior to arriving at camp. Due to the fact we were not quarantining at home, the risk of covid entering camp was higher. However, testing was more readily available. We performed ongoing testing at camp, and our campers & staff were tested once a week on average. Our entire camp population tested negative throughout the eight-week season, except for three campers. Contact tracing was performed, and those who had ‘contact’, were quarantined/separated from the general population and provided a different activity schedule. The campers who tested positive were sent home, as well as the campers who came in contact with them during their quarantine. Our protocols successfully prevented the virus from spreading.

SUMMER 2022

Thank you for your interest in our summer program. We are preparing to address the ongoing pandemic in a similar fashion to Summer 2020 and 2021 by creating a covid-free environment. The policies and procedures that successfully kept our population safe & healthy will be implemented again in 2022. However, a lot can happen between now and opening day, so our protocols will be adjusted as the condition of public health, vaccination/mask mandates, and therapeutic measures change.

Rest assured, we are constantly monitoring the situation, sharing best practices, and communicating with our colleagues and advisors to ensure we protect our camp population, while keeping our program active and vibrant. We have the appropriate supervisory staff to carry out an effective plan to prevent Covid-19 from entering our camp community and, should that fail, we have procedures in place to detect the virus early, contain it, and care for those infected.

To see our 2022 Health Plan, click here. This plan will be adjusted in accordance with CDC, ACA, and Pennsylvania guidelines as they continue to evolve. While we do not know the future status of Covid-19, we can assure you our plan will create and maintain a virus-free environment to protect our campers and staff. We are confident Summer 2022 will be safe, healthy, and fun - just like it was in 2020 and 2021.

CREATIVE ARTS & MEDIA ARTS

The Creative Arts Program offers a broad spectrum of activities that provide an opportunity for all campers to express themselves artistically. There’s so much to do at the Creative Arts Pavilion!

QUALIFIED STAFF

The Creative Arts & Media Arts Program operates independently on each campus. Each program is headed-up by an Art Director who has experience managing an Art Program that encompasses instructing children and supervising staff. The same holds true on Junior Campus for the Pottery & Ceramics Program. Each of these programs is headed-up by a Director who has experience managing their specialty area. Generally, the Directors are certified art teachers during the school year and are accustomed to teaching art expression at all levels of abilities. Assisting our Art Directors are several university-level instructors, who are majoring in Art and/or have documented experience teaching art to children.

QUALITY INSTRUCTION

Instruction is patient, and geared to your individual ability. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner at pottery or an expert at drawing, our Creative Arts Instructors are talented and experienced at teaching all levels of art expression to children of all ages.

ART & CRAFTS

The Arts & Crafts Program includes a variety of projects: T-shirt creations (tie dyeing, air brushing, fabric painting, silk screening), painting (water color & acrylics), drawing, sketching (charcoal pencils), jewelry making, beading, basket weaving, lanyards & braiding, macramé, paper mache & plaster projects, wood projects, copper enameling, block printing, needle craft, mask making, decoupage, shrinky dinks, model rocketry (building & launching Estes rockets), and nature crafts. Arts & Crafts is a Free-Choice Elective offered daily to campers entering 5th grade and higher. The Junior Division (4th grade and lower) is scheduled ‘Creative Arts’ 4-5 times weekly which includes A&C, pottery, and ceramics.

POTTERY

The Pottery Program is headed-up by the Pottery Director (Junior Campus) who has experience operating pottery programs for children. Assisting the Director are university-level instructors who specialize in pottery wheel operation. On Junior Campus, the Pottery Room measures 50’ by 25’ and operates with 15 pottery wheels. On Teen Campus the program operates with 9 wheels. Pottery is a Free-Choice Elective offered daily to campers entering 5th grade and higher.

CERAMICS

The Ceramics Program is popular with campers who enjoy clay work, sculpting, glazing, and firing. The Program is headed-up by the Ceramics Director (Junior Campus) who has experience managing a ceramics program for children. Assisting the Director are college-level instructors who specialize in clay work and kiln operation. The Program operates with 3 kilns on Junior Campus and 2 on Teen Campus. The Ceramics Studio measures 50’ by 25’ and offers plenty of space for clay projects. It also has a separate kiln room. Ceramics is a Free-Choice Elective offered daily to campers entering 5th grade and higher.

CAMP NEWSPAPER

The Camp Newspaper Activity is opportunity for campers to express themselves through creative writing. Campers select their writing ‘assignments’ for the next newspaper, and become involved in researching facts, conducting personal interviews, and so on. Their articles are published in the ‘Cayuga Chronicle’ (camper newspaper) about every two weeks. Camp Newspaper is a Free-Choice Elective that’s offered several times weekly.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Digital Photography includes basic fundamental instruction in camera use and taking photographs. Camp Cayuga provides the cameras and all other equipment. The colorful prints, taken by our campers in the past, have been beautiful! Photography is a Free-Choice Elective that’s offered several times weekly.

RADIO BROADCASTING

The Radio Broadcasting Activity is especially popular with campers who enjoy listening to music. It’s a daily Free-Choice Elective on Teen Campus, and is instructed by the camp’s Disc Jockey who typically has DJ experience at the college-level. Each Radio Show features plenty of music, song dedications, and general announcements including birthday greetings, intercamp tournament scores, and upcoming events.

FACILITIES

The Teen Campus Art Pavilion measures 105’ by 30’, and includes an open-air Art Project Area, an indoor Pottery Room with 8 pottery wheels, a Kiln room, and storage rooms. The Junior Campus Creative Arts Pavilion measures 150' by 50' and includes an open-air Art Project Area; a Pottery Room with 8 pottery wheels; a Ceramics Studio; and a T-Shirt Creations Room. OPTIONAL SERVICES

OPTIONAL SERVICES

LINEN RENTAL SERVICE

Camp Cayuga's offers a linen rental service that includes a set of sheets, one pillowcase, and enough blankets to ensure a comfortable sleep.  Pillows, towels, and washcloths are not included in this service and need to be provided by the camper.  (Pillows are available for purchase at the camp store.)  The weekly laundering of the camp’s linens is included in the canteen fee.

LINEN RENTAL SERVICE FEE:  The fee for this service is $140 for the full-season, $105 for the 6-week session, $70 for the half-session, and $35 for the 2-week session.  Children with a history of bed-wetting are strongly encouraged to sign-up for this service to ensure clean bedding whenever needed (no extra charge).  Otherwise, the charge is $3 each time a clean set of linens is provided.

HEALTH POLICY:  The camp's policy requires campers to sleep between 2 sheets and if using a pillow, a pillowcase is required.  We recommend 'cot-size' sheets (2 fitted & 2 flat).  The cot-size mattress measures 75” x 30” x 5”.  Campers are not permitted to sleep inside their sleeping bag in the cabin, however the sleeping bag can be used as an extra blanket.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  You can register for this service at the time you enroll your camper, or register online at any time. Simply, go to ‘Forms and Documents’ on your dashboard, click ‘Additional Options’, then click ‘Optional Programs’ and select ‘Linen Rental Service’.

BUS TRANSPORTATION AND BAGGAGE SERVICE

Camp Cayuga offers bus transportation and baggage service to/from the New York area.  The chartered buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and equipped with a restroom.  Your camper’s baggage will be transported on the bus

AVAILABILITY:  This service is available 4 times during the summer: 1) To camp on opening day (Sunday, 6/30/24); 2) To camp on the second-half session start date (Sunday, 7/28/24); 3) From camp at the end of first-half session (Saturday, 7/27/24); 4) From camp at the end of the summer (Saturday, 8/24/24).

BUS-STOP LOCATIONS & FEES:  The bus & baggage service caters to families in the New York area.  The two locations for pick-up and drop-off are: 1) West Nyack, Rockland County, New York; and 2) Manhasset, Long Island, New York.  The fee is $120 one-way ($240 roundtrip).

NOTIFICATION:  You’ll receive a schedule via email 5-7 days before your camper's arrival/departure, which will confirm your assigned bus location and time of pick-up/drop-off.  Driving directions will be included.  For arrival days, each piece of luggage (including small carry-on items) must be tagged and labeled with your child’s name.

BAGGAGE LIMITATIONS:  Baggage will be transported in the bus compartments. Campers are limited to one standard-size hard trunk or soft trunk (preferred), one suitcase or another soft trunk, and a small duffle bag or sleeping bag.  Please limit the weight of each piece to 50lbs.  In addition, campers may bring a carry-on item such as a backpack.  Small dressers and storage containers that don’t fit under the bed (height must be 15” or less) are not permitted, and will not be transported to camp.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  You can register for this service at the time you enroll your camper, or register online at any time. Simply, go to ‘Forms and Documents’ on your dashboard, click ‘Additional Options’, then click ‘Optional Programs’ and select your bus location under the ‘Transportation’ section.

AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION SERVICE

Cayuga provides transportation to/from 3 major airports.  On arrival day, our staff will escort your child from the airport directly to Camp Cayuga.  On departure day, our staff will accompany your child from camp to the security gate at the airline’s terminal, and remain at the airport until your child’s plane is in the air.

AVAILABLE AIRPORTS:
* Wilkesbarre/Scranton Airport (AVP-Avoca, Pennsylvania) is the closest airport being only 35 miles (1 hour drive) from camp. It’s the smallest airport on our list, and your child will likely need a connecting flight to arrive here.
* Newark Airport (EWR-Newark, New Jersey) has more direct flights than Wilkesbarre/ Scranton Airport and is closer to camp than JFK Airport. Newark is the preferred airport and encourage you to use it.
* JFK Airport (Jamaica, New York) is located in a heavy-traffic area of New York and is farthest from camp.  We do not recommend this airport and discourage you from using it, if possible.  Flights to/from JFK may cost less than Newark Airport, but your child’s ride to camp is about 1½ hours longer.

SERVICE FEE:  Newark International Airport fee is $240 roundtrip ($120 one-way); WilkesBarre/Scranton Airport fee is $140 roundtrip ($70 one-way); JFK International Airport fee is $280 roundtrip ($140 one-way).  Additional fees apply for flights that do not arrive/depart on official session dates

ACCEPTABLE FLIGHT TIMES:  Before making flight arrangements, read the camp’s ‘Airport Transportation Instructions’ located on your dashboard under ‘Forms & Documents’.  They explain the designated times for arrival & departure flights, and include other valuable information.  After making your child’s flight reservations, you must complete the ‘Airport Transportation Itinerary Form’.  This form is also located on your dashboard.  The itinerary is due 2 weeks before your camper’s arrival.  To return the itinerary, please upload.
