INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANT

INSTRUCTIONS

HOW TO APPLY – UNITED STATES CITIZENS

All applicants are required to complete an Employment Application. The fastest way to apply is to use the online application. If you prefer a paper application (PDF), contact the Cayuga Business Office and we’ll gladly send it to you. The online application is for United States citizens, and residents who have a green card or other documentation authorizing employment in the United States. If you do not currently possess the required papers & documentation for employment in the USA, follow the instructions below for ‘International Applicants’.

COUNSELOR APPLICANTS

Keep in mind that all cabin counselors are hired as instructors for multiple activities. We’re seeking multi-talented individuals! You can apply for as many instructor positions as you'd like. The daily program stresses self-improvement with emphasis on instruction rather than competition. Quality instruction is emphasized at each activity. To determine your level of competency, we need to know your experience as a player/competitor for each activity you wish to instruct, as well as your experience as an instructor/coach in each activity. We're interested in learning the reasons why you feel confident to lead the activities you've selected to instruct. Please remember to indicate all valid certifications you currently hold & any other certifications that were previously held but are now expired. For a list of available instructor positions, click here. Applicants with current certification in their hired area of expertise are preferred. Other certifications, such as first-aid & CPR, are also preferred.

SENIOR STAFF APPLICANTS

Camp Cayuga is actively supervised by the Camp Directors. Assisting them are over 40 senior staff members who are typically parents with children, professional educators, guidance counselors, school teachers, and coaches. These individuals are our camp leaders who set the tone for Cayuga's fun atmosphere, and are responsible for the key departments of Cayuga's operation. Each position requires strong leadership & management skills, good teaching ability, an outgoing personality, and the ability to be organized & work hard. Senior staff receive free camp tuition for their children. For a list of available senior staff positions, click here.

CAMP NURSE APPLICANTS

We’re seeking to hire 15 licensed professionals who are suitably qualified to monitor and care for the health and well-being of our campers and staff members. The Health Center on Junior Campus houses 4-5 medical staff, while the Health Center on Teen Campus houses 2-3 medical staff. Positions are available for 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks. In the past, our staff have included RNs, NPs, PAs, LPNs, EMTs, and MDs, all of whom had experience with children and young adults in the areas of health and medical emergencies. In addition, we usually hire 2 assistants who are nursing students and/or medical students. Medical staff are provided a private bedroom with a private bathroom, and receive free camp tuition for their children. To learn more about Cayuga's medical staff, click here.

* The hiring process takes a lot of time & effort on our part, as well as yours, but it’s all worth it because our staff is the #1 reason why Cayuga is successful!

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

If you're an International Applicant (not a United States citizen), you must have a valid green card or J-1 work visa. Most applicants obtain a J-1 Visa through the Exchange Visitor’s Program, which offers a ‘Camp Counselor Program’ and ‘Summer Work Travel Program’ for support staff (kitchen & maintenance). Both programs allow temporary work in the United States up to 4 months.

After determining the appropriate J-1 program, the next step is to contact a sponsor. Only State Department-designated sponsors are authorized to issue J-1 visas. Sponsors screen and select prospective exchange visitors based on the criteria set forth in the governing regulations.  For the ‘Camp Counselor Program’, we recommend Camp Counselors USA; Camp Leaders; International Exchange of North America (IENA); American Institute For Foreign Study-Camp America Program; or InterExchange Camp USA. For the ‘Summer Work Travel Program’ (support staff), we suggest Camp Leaders. Contact one of the sponsors directly to find out more about their application requirements.

A sevis-generated Form DS-20xx is required when applying for the J-1 Visa.  Designated sponsors are authorized to issue Form DS-20xx to prospective or current exchange visitors they select for their program. It’s a controlled form provided to you by your program sponsor.  It documents your acceptance to the exchange program. Once you obtain Form DS-20xx from a Sponsor, you may apply for an Exchange Visitor Visa (J-1). You’ll need to provide other supporting documents, so check with the nearest USA embassy or consulate in your country of residence.  The process requires an in-person interview, references, valid passport for travel to the USA, health insurance coverage, visa application fee, photograph, etc.

All staff members are provided comfortable housing. Cabin Counselors reside in modern cabins with 8-14 campers (Junior Campus) or 18-24 campers (Teen Campus). Each camper cabin has its own bathroom that includes 4-5 sinks, 3-7 private shower stalls, and 3-7 private toilets. FOOD SERVICE PROVIDED

We take a lot of pride in the quality of food we serve to our staff and campers. Our chefs prepare 3 well-balanced, nutritious meals daily. The menu changes daily and rotates every 14 days. It’s prepared by a licensed dietician, and appeals to the taste buds of a camper on a normal diet. Vegetarian meals and entrée alternatives (leftovers) are available. Although rigid dietary guidelines are not observed, we serve neither pork nor shellfish. Our meats, fish, vegetables, and fruit are of the very best quality. Everyone is encouraged to eat as much as they'd like, and no one ever leaves the dining hall hungry!  The kitchen staff is comprised of a food service manager, 3 cooks, 1 assistant cook, and 18 crew members.

LAUNDRY SERVICE

Cayuga provides a free laundry service to its staff members. The laundering of your clothing and linens is done weekly by a commercial laundry company. There are local laundromats in Honesdale for those individuals who prefer to do their own laundering on their nights or days off.

FREE TIME

There isn't much free time at camp for anyone! Our campers are ‘in-action’ from morning until bedtime, and for the most part, the same holds true for our staff, especially our cabin counselors. (Click here for Daily Time Schedule.) After an action-packed day, co-cabin counselors rotate their free time in the evenings at the game room and staff lounge. For other staff, free-time will vary depending upon the individual’s position and responsibilities. Typically, during free-time staff hang-out at the game room and staff lounge, which features satellite TV and internet. It's a cozy place reserved exclusively for staff.

DAYS-OFF

All staff members receive 1 day-off for every 9 days of employment. A night-off is always scheduled on the evening preceding the day-off, which amounts to 29+ consecutive hours of free time. For instance, if your day-off is Thursday, you’re permitted to depart camp on Wednesday at 7:00pm, and need not return to camp until after midnight on Thursday evening. In this example, curfew is actually 12:30am on Friday. It’s a nice block of free time, and affords the opportunity to visit neighboring Pocono Mountain attractions, including Bushkill Falls, Delaware River White Water Rafting, Pocono Downs Horse Racing, Pocono Raceway (Nascar), Lake Wallenpaupack Boat Rentals, Golf Courses, Apple Day Spa & Salon, Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, The Crossings Premium Outlets, Viewmont Mall, and Mohegan Sun Pocono Racetrack & Casino, to name a few. When venturing beyond the Poconos, many staff visit places like New York City, the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Incidentally, Camp Cayuga is only 7 miles from the village of Honesdale (the birthplace of the American Railroad). It’s a fast-growing community offering many conveniences, such as sandwich & coffee shops, pizzerias, diner & restaurants (Chinese, Mexican, Italian, American), fast food (McDonalds, Wendy's), Dunkin Donuts, Walmart, Home Depot, thrift shops, TJ Maxx, laundromats, car rental service, auto repair shops, and plenty of gas stations. Off-duty staff members have access to most camp facilities and activities when the use doesn't interfere with the camper's activity program.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

We welcome your interest in summer employment with Camp Cayuga.  Before you complete our online staff application, please read the pages in this ‘Employment’ section. We believe the information will enable you to make an intelligent decision about your summer employment.  Our hope is that a forthright presentation will attract individuals with a high success potential and discourage those who might not do well in the camp environment.

ELIGIBILITY & AGE REQUIREMENT

Although many staff members return year after year, each summer we hire a number of individuals who will be spending their first summer at Camp Cayuga. Staff applicants must have completed one (1) year of college or must be at least 19 years of age. Our staff members are high-caliber individuals who are attending or have attended fine colleges & universities throughout the United States, as well as England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and other English-speaking countries. Our youngest counselor is entering his/her sophomore year of college. Some counselors are graduate students who are 22-23 years of age. The average age counselor is 21 years old.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES

Working at camp is not an easy job, and it can be very difficult at times. To do well in camp, it's important to have a genuine interest in children. Unless you truly enjoy living & working with kids on a 24-hour basis, it is best not to seek employment at a summer camp. Job satisfaction has to be a key element in your desire to work at a summer camp. Since camp positions, for the most part, do not pay as well as other summer jobs, the rewards you derive from working with children must be significant. Otherwise, the job will grow very tiresome during the course of the summer and your desire to continue employment will wane. Enjoying your time with our campers is critical. Being able to relate to children and assume responsibilities of care & supervision are essential qualities of a successful staff member.

ROLE MODELS

As part of Cayuga's staff, you become a role model for our campers. Your behavior will have a big impact upon the lives of these youngsters! It stands to reason that we’re seeking individuals with high moral character. Our staff members exhibit integrity, good sportsmanship, fortitude, and honesty; and work hard each day to provide our campers a positive & memorable camp experience.

COLLEGE-AGED APPLICANTS

We're seeking multi-talented counselors who are qualified to instruct more than one activity. Most counselors will be instructing different activities throughout the day or week. This flexibility affords variety in the instructor's schedule, and provides the daily program with the means to operate 60+ activities each period each day without any interruptions.

MEDICAL STAFF APPLICANTS

Cayuga’s medical staff consists of RNs, NPs, PAs, LPNs, and EMTs who need to be licensed in Pennsylvania. (Temporary license can be obtained.) In addition, we usually hire 2 assistants who are nursing students and/or medical students. The camp nurses must have experience with children and young adults in the areas of health and medical emergencies. We expect our nursing staff to respond to campers with sensitivity, and have the ability to enjoy working with them on a daily basis. Medical staff are provided a private bedroom with a private bathroom.

SENIOR STAFF APPLICANTS

Cayuga's senior staff team is comprised of mature adults who are parents with children, professional educators, guidance counselors, and/or coaches. Senior Staff are responsible for the key areas of Cayuga's operation. All positions require strong leadership & management skills, an outgoing personality, and the ability to be organized & work hard. Activity Directorship positions also require the ability to ensure top-quality instruction at all skill levels, and conduct training sessions with instructors in order to evaluate and qualify them prior to campers arriving. Senior Staff receive free camp tuition for their children.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

If you're not a United States citizen, you must obtain the appropriate legal documents authorizing your job position in the United States at Camp Cayuga. This includes a valid work visa, green card, or valid J-1 visa. Without proper legal documentation, you're ineligible to apply for employment. To learn how to obtain a J-1 visa, go to ‘Instructions’.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS

To evaluate your potential for success this summer, ask yourself:
* Have you enjoyed working with children previously?
* To what extent have you worked with children?
* Can you live and work with children on a 24-hour basis?
* Can you acclimate to the camp community with its rigid schedules?
* Are you enthusiastic & fun? Are you patient & understanding?
* Can you carry-out and enforce the camp’s rules?
* Can you maintain your stamina & fortitude throughout the entire summer?
